Edge enGage and Liferay Portal
Rapid Application Integration for Liferay
Liferay Portal offers easy-to-use, standards-based viewing of traditional static website content - HTML pages, static forms and reports, as well as dynamic content such as Flash, or directly attached audio and video feeds, along with a growing range of 3rd party portlets (RSS feeds, calendars, schedulers, weather and stock tickers, etc.) that can be accessed via a locally attached content management system. However the integration of multiple applications, especially those of a real-time nature, is a more difficult proposition and typically requires extensive development effort. When integrating complete or partial applications into Liferay for external or remote user access (such as in implementing secure intranets or extranets) it becomes necessary to add another component - an application proxy - in order to avoid undesirable behavior on the part of these applications.
"Taming" The Toughest Applications Quickly - Even In Real Time
Some application behavior, when viewed through a portal, can be unpredictable. In many cases an application may take over the user's browser or fail to render correctly. Some applications are unable to segment data between multiple users, requiring some additional means to apply external partitioning or data segmentation rules. In such cases the proxy capability within Edge enGage is invaluable as it enables fine-grained control over exactly which pieces of an application are to be exposed to individual users, according to the user's status, role and access privileges. enGage's programmable proxy gives the portal administrator unparalleled capability to segment and integrate web applications into portlet-based views very quickly and easily via a series of menus, without the need for extensive programming, as is traditionally the case with most application integrations into portal platforms.
The Edge Experience
Edge Technologies has extensive experience building secure intranets and extranets based around application integrations - including external customer access to real-time information (such as event streams from IBM Netcool, network topology mapping by HP OpenView, trouble-ticket views with Remedy or network performance views in CA eHealth). Edge solutions are deployed in some of the world's most complex, demanding and secure IT environments, both commercial and Federal. Examples include strategic network operations centers, customer service websites, and extending secure customer self-service to traditional websites for large service providers. Edge enGage adds the secure proxy capability, as well as security and control over full or partial application views - creating and rendering industry-standard JSR168 portlet views from existing non-portlet based applications.
Edge has a strong track record in delivering large-scale, industrial-strength portals along with the services and support that eliminates the project and schedule risk and helps these projects succeed where many have failed.
