Visualization Realizations

When it comes to designing and building dashboards, it is only natural to want to create something that is as visually appealing as possible. Nobody wants to invest their time and energy implementing something that looks... boring. Our customers and partners have realized the benefit of working with the talented Edge team to produce great-looking visuals. But in truly successful projects, engaging dashboards are the end result made possible by other key components:

  • Smart visualizations. In painting a picture that will help users quickly recognize and understand critical elements within very large and complex datasets, we often need to look beyond commonly used graphs and charts to find visualizations that lend themselves fast, intuitive information interpretation. For example, interactive Sankey diagrams are great for representing flows and volumes of information.

  • Data integrations. Most organizations or agencies use many tools from many vendors which do not always work well together. Through enPortal®, Edge provides out-of-box Single Sign-On (SSO) and web-layer UI integration to over 80 applications, allowing customers to create role-based views of their information and direct, in-context access to their tools which greatly simplifies the end-user's workflow.
  • A solid architecture. While an intuitive, flexible, and unified visualization layer is of the utmost importance, it must be built upon a solid foundation. Foundational elements include integration with user authentication methods and systems, multi-tenant support, advanced security features, the ability to integrate both raw data and existing views from tools that are already in place, and re-branding capabilities to name just a few.
  • Building a Knowledge Library. Many large organizations have a vast array of information that could and should be shared more effectively between teams. As we work with our customers we can jointly identify elements that might be re-purposed by other groups. We then help them document what those resources consist of, where they can be accessed, and who the subject matter experts are. On the virtual "shelves" within the Knowledge Library you might find information on internally developed and commercial applications, databases, queries and the associated datasets and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), along with examples of visualizations, dashboards, and user workflows.

What else have you found to be a key component in your successful information visualization project? Drop me a line with your own realizations and perhaps we can share them with others in a future edition of the Edge Insider.

IBM InterConnect

Our thanks go out to those of you who joined us for a rocking debut of IBM InterConnect - the combination of the Impact, Innovate, and Pulse conferences. Edge showcased our latest integrations and visualizations in a demo built just for this event. If you missed it, or if you want to share what you saw with your colleagues, just contact us and we'll gladly arrange for an online demonstration.

BMC Technology Day and Exchange Federal

It was also great seeing those of you who ascended the heights of the Willis Tower for BMC Technology Day - Digital Transformation for the Enterprise in Chicago! We saw examples of disruptive and transforming technologies (not to mention Lake Michigan).

Finally we extend our gratitude to those who joined us at BMC Exchange 2015 Federal. Both BMC events allowed us to showcase many of our 14 BMC Software integrations and our new BMC-themed dashboards.
